About Breast Lift Plastic Surgery

The natural aging process as well as major life events of pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight loss can all negatively impact the appearance, shape and size of a woman’s breasts. As the breast tissue is stretched and the skin loses elasticity, the breasts can begin to sag.

The good news is that a breast lift procedure, or mastopexy, can noticeably improve the shape and appearance of the breasts. A breast lift improves the shape and profile of the breasts, returning them to a more youthful position and shape. This procedure corrects for breasts that seem saggy or deflated.

Breast lift surgery, is a real solution for patients seeking breast rejuvenation that actually gives a lift to the body shape and profile. Returning the breasts to a more youthful position and shape allows other features to be noticed, like a narrow rib cage and defined waist, shapely shoulders and decollete. When pleasing proportion is restored, patients also benefit from a boost in self-confidence.

The Power Of A Breast Lift

If you’re looking to return your breasts to a perkier, youthful appearance then a breast lift is a great option for you. A breast lift helps improve the shape and profile of your breast while correcting breasts that look saggy or deflated. Other benefits include:

  1. Alleviating sagging breasts
  2. Minimizing enlarged areolas
  3. Removing excess breast skin tissue
  4. Molding beautiful shape and contours
  5. Lifting and reshaping the underlying breast tissue to improve contours and firmness
  6. Repositioning the nipple and areola to a higher, youthful and natural position
  7. Reducing enlarged areolas when necessary
  8. Removing excess breast tissue that has lost elasticity
  9. Restoring lost volume
  10. Improving the shape and profile of your breast
  11. Enhancing other parts of the body such as the rib cage, stomach and décolletage

If you’ve got larger breasts with full volume, a breast list may be the only thing you need to restore your breasts to a youthful appearance.

If you have smaller breasts, you might opt for a combination of a breast lift with a breast augmentation so you get an optimal outcome.

Note: You’ll want to wait to have a breast lift until you’re done having children. This is because both pregnancy and breastfeeding can stretch the breasts and undo any previous lift procedures.

Correcting Sagging Breasts with Mastopexy

Have your breasts started to sag over time? Here is why.

As the breast tissue is stretched and the skin loses elasticity, the breasts can begin to sag leaving you less confident and less likely to love the skin you’re in. The good news is that a breast lift procedure, also called a mastopexy, can noticeably improve the shape and appearance of your breasts.

The Breast Lift Surgical Procedure

All procedures at Ennis Plastic Surgery start with a consultation with Dr. Ennis. You’ll be able to voice any questions or worries you have about your breast lift surgery. Dr. Ennis will go over all the details of your surgery so you’ll know what to expect on the day of your procedure.

Rest assured that Dr. Ennis specializes in minimally invasive, short-incision techniques. Shorter incisions give outcomes with smaller, less visible scarring.

On the day of your procedure, you’ll meet with a board-certified MD anesthesiologist who will provide you care and comfort under general anesthesia. Dr. Ennis will then begin your procedure. Once the incision is made, Dr. Ennis will use special techniques to offer you the best results.

Type of Breast Lifts

1. The Peri-areolar (Benelli) Lift

This is the perfect lift if you need a small breast lift with only minor repositioning of the areola and tightening of the skin. It is also commonly performed if you’re undergoing a breast augmentation in addition to the breast lift. The benefit of this technique is that the nipple position and breast shape are both improved. In this procedure, the surgeon creates an incision around the areola, allowing for reduction in the size of the areola to 1.5 inches diameter.

The outer layer of excess skin is removed and the areola is positioned properly. The areola is not completely removed, but reattached once the excess skin is removed. Sutures are placed to close the incision precisely and securely. The skin around the areola will appear puckered for a few weeks after surgery, but once the surgery is healed, the breast softens and the skin flattens.

2. The Vertical Breast Lift

This breast lift utilizes an incision that goes around the nipple and then downward to the breast crease (where the breast meets the torso). This incision is sometimes called the lollipop lift because the incision is created in the shape of a lollipop. This approach allows for expert repositioning of the nipple and remodeling of the breast tissue into a youthful and pleasing shape. The surgeon removes excess skin and the deep layer of breast tissue is sutured together to reshape the breast.

The areola is positioned in a more pleasing way and the incision is closed. This technique typically does not result in any puckering around the areola, but it initially leaves the breasts high and perky. Within a few weeks of healing, the breasts soften and assume a natural and pleasing appearance.

3. The Inverted T Breast Lift

This breast lift technique utilizes an inverted T shaped incision, running down the middle of the breast and along the base. Combining these two incisions allows Dr. Ennis to remove the maximum amount of skin and allows for the greatest breast reshaping. Dr. Ennis will then remove excess skin and tighten the existing area. Dr. Ennis will also suture the deep layer of breast tissue for reshaping.

The areola is positioned into a higher and more pleasing position and the incisions are closed. This technique typically does not result in any skin puckering but does leave the breasts high and perky initially.  In the few weeks of recovery, the breasts settle into a natural and pleasing position.

Based on the incision type, the surgeon enhances the breast shape by:

  • Lifting and reshaping the underlying breast tissue to improve contours and firmness
  • Repositioning the nipple and areola to a higher, youthful and natural position
  • Reducing enlarged areolas when necessary
  • Removing excess breast tissue that has lost elasticity

About Breast Lift Scars

Dr. Ennis is experienced with all techniques and strives to create short incisions for optimal results with limited scarring. Some incision lines are concealed by the breasts natural contours, such as the horizontal incision at the base of the breast, or in the transition between the darker areola to the lighter breast skin. Incision scars are permanent but they will fade and improve over time. The Ennis Plastic Surgery teams prides itself on limiting scarring whenever possible.

Breast Lift Recovery

Your breast lift surgery will take about 2 to 3 hours and is done under anesthesia from our board-certified MD anesthesiologist. If you have any additional procedures at the same time, your surgery may take a little longer.

Once Dr. Ennis has completed the breast lift, with or without augmentation, the surgical incisions are closed with sutures or tape. Your breasts are wrapped in a gauze bandage to protect and support them while they heal. You’ll also want to wear a surgical bra during your healing phase.

It’s perfectly normal to have some swelling in the surgical area. The swelling will decrease rapidly over several weeks following surgery. Because your breast tissue has been altered and stretched, pain should be expected. Dr. L. Scott Ennis will go over the appropriate pain management for your surgery. You should be able to go home within just a few hours of surgery.

You’ll want to follow all the appropriate instructions for recovery, care and any additional appointments. Make sure to rest for the first few days after surgery to ensure proper healing. You’ll feel some soreness and swelling for the first few weeks and that’s to be expected. You’ll want to avoid heavy lifting for four to six weeks. You should be able to return to normal work and household activities within one week.
