Liposuction

Boca Raton, Palm Beach Florida

Liposuction is meant for individuals that have a responsible diet and persistent areas of fat accumulation. Heredity plays a great role in body type, including areas of fat deposits. Some people are genetically predisposed to carry fat cells around the hips and buttocks, while many others naturally carry fat cells around the abdomen, thighs, arms, face and/or back. These stubborn problem areas are very difficult to shed through diet and exercise alone. Liposuction is an excellent option to reshape these problem areas.

An Introduction to Liposuction

Liposuction removes* unwanted fat for beautiful contours. Liposuction is the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedure in the United States with over 300,000 procedures performed each year. Liposuction can reduce the appearance of unsightly bulges and improve the contour and shape of your body. During the liposuction procedure, small, thin tubes (cannula) are inserted under the skin through small incisions. Fat is withdrawn (or removed*) through these tubes as the surgeon skillfully moves the tubes to strategically contour and shape your body.

Liposuction procedures can be performed on their own or in combination with other cosmetic surgical procedures such as a tummy tuck and breast lift. Ennis Plastic Surgery offers expert liposuction treatment for incomparable results.

Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss, but rather a tool to improve the form of a healthy body. Liposuction acts as an adjunct for healthy living and wellbeing. Think of liposuction as the surgeons skill of liposculpting. Just as important as what is taken out, is the shape that is left behind.

Types of Liposuction

1. Tumescent liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is the technique used by most plastic surgeons. Dr. Ennis brings an expert level of skill when performing this technique. He is strategic in the placement of incisions and in the methodical contouring approach. With the tumescent liposuction approach, the surgeon injects the areas to be treated with a mixture of saline, epinephrine and a local anesthetic. This mixture works as a wetting solution on the fat cells for easier removal*. The epinephrine works to reduce bleeding and bruising. The local anesthetic decreases post-operative discomfort.

Dr. Ennis carefully inserts the narrow cannula under the skin to break up and remove* your unwanted fat cells. The fat cells are withdrawn through the narrow tube, leaving your body. During this procedure, a large amount of wetting solution is used, which may leave you feeling swollen. Rest assured that this swelling will subside over your course of recovery.

2. Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL method)

The Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL method) uses the most recent generation Microaire Power Assisted Liposuction System to enhance his patients results. The PAL method uses a vibrating cannula to more easily remove* fat and at the same time is gentler on the body. In addition, he is able to use a small cannula, minimizing the impact and strain on surrounding tissues. The vibrating cannula quickly loosens and breaks up tough, compact fat cells with precise movement. This method allows for a smoother and more precise contouring.

3. Ultrasonic liposuction

During the Ultrasonic liposuction approach, the cannula tip emits ultrasonic energy in the form of sound waves.  Ultrasound is a form of energy that uses sound waves, similar to those used in a pregnancy ultrasound. But in ultrasonic liposuction, the sound waves are at a much higher frequency. When fat cells are exposed to high frequency ultrasound, they vibrate and then liquefy. The surgeon utilizes the ultrasonic method for secondary liposuction procedures.

Is Liposuction Right for You

Are you a candidate? Contrary to common belief, liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. In fact, the ideal candidate for liposuction is a healthy adult that is at or near his or her ideal weight. The ideal candidate eats a healthy diet and exercises regularly. Despite disciplined eating and healthy exercise, he or she is still troubled by stubborn areas of fat accumulation. Weight loss should be achieved prior to surgery.

Liposuction is very effective in removing* fat deposits in specific areas. However, it is not a permanent shield from fat accumulation. If you gain weight after having liposuction, the fatty bulges may reappear, as you would accumulate fat in your weight gain.

If you are considering liposuction, first you must reflect if you are looking for a quick fix. If so, liposuction is not for you. If you are leading a healthy lifestyle of diet and exercise but are troubled by problem areas, then liposuction may be an excellent option for you.

What to Expect During Liposuction Procedure

Prior to surgery, you will meet the surgeon and our team of dedicated support staff for an individualized consultation, where you will discuss your concerns, problem areas and desired outcomes. With the guidance of the doctor, you will establish realistic goals and an appropriate course of treatment.

On the day of surgery, your surgeon will draw on your body over the areas to be treated. You will have a visual indication of the contouring to be done. You will lie on the operating table and receive anesthesia by our board certified anesthesiologists. Liposuction is administered under general anesthesia, conscious sedation or local anesthesia. Depending on the extent of fat removal to be accomplished, you may be given varying degrees of anesthesia. For large areas or multiple areas, you may be put under general anesthesia. For small areas, you may be given a local anesthetic and sedative.

When anesthesia is involved, only MD anesthesiologists are utilized at Ennis Plastic Surgery. This way, you can be confident that you are receiving anesthetic care from a board certified medical doctor, specializing in anesthesia.

Liposuction Recovery

In your recovery, you should expect to feel sore in the area that was treated.  You should expect bruising and swelling for the first week after the procedure. Fluid may drain from your incision site and you may be given antibiotics to reduce any risk of infection.

After the liposuction procedure, patients are placed in a compressive garment to help reduce swelling, bruising and discomfort. You may wear a firm fitting garment for several weeks after your liposuction procedure.  Patients are able to get up and move around as soon as the effects of the anesthesia have worn off. You can return to your normal activities as soon as you feel comfortable, but it may take several days or weeks. Many people return to work within a few days after having liposuction. If larger areas or multiple areas were treated with liposuction, you may need longer time to recover.

Typical Side Effects of Liposuction

  1. Temporary swelling and bruising in and around the area that was treated
  2. Soreness and discomfort
  3. Minor scarring around the incision sites where the cannulas were used
  4. Rippling skin: This procedure removes* fat cells beneath the skin’s surface. When the fat cells are removed*, the skin may appear loose or rippling. Typically this skin will tighten and retract after a few months, depending on the skin’s elasticity. However, the skin’s appearance will depend on the elasticity of your skin. Younger skin tends to have greater elasticity than older skin, so the area may bounce back more quickly in younger patients.

Some improvement in body shape is noticeable right away. Improvement will continue for several weeks or even months, as your swelling subsides and bruising fades. Most patients see outcomes around 3 weeks after surgery, as most of the swelling has abated and much of the bruising has faded. The full effects of liposuction may not be appreciated for several months after having the procedure.
