About Acne

Your skin is covered in small pores which can become blocked by oil, dirt, makeup and bacteria. When there is a blocked pore, you can develop a pimple. Changes in hormones are the most common triggers of acne. Stages of life that bring about hormonal changes (puberty, menstruation, and pregnancy) are prone to increased acne. Hormonal changes increase the amount of oil that your pores produce, which can block pores and cause uncomfortable skin lesions.

Acne can present in many forms including:

  • Blackheads: Blackheads are small bumps that appear on your skin as a result of clogged hair follicles. The surface of the bump looks dark/black.
  • Whiteheads: Whiteheads are a type of acne that forms when dead skin cells, oil and bacteria are trapped within a pore. The whitehead forms under the surface of a closed pore.
  • Papules: A papule is a small abnormal area of skin lesion, usually a result of irritation or reaction to infection, medication, or cosmetics.
  • Pustules: Pustules are what most people think of as pimples. They are small areas of skin that contain puss or oil.
  • Cysts: A cyst occurs when a pustule becomes hard and painful.

Acne Side effects

Oftentimes after acne clears it leaves visible discoloration or scars on the skin. Here is a list of some of the common side effects of acne.

  • Dark spots on the skin: Dark spots appear after the acne heals. Dark spots can take months or years to heal.
  • Scarring: People who get cystic acne are often left with scars when the acne clears. As you age, your skin loses collagen, making acne scars more visible.

Fortunately, at Ennis Plastic Surgery, there are treatment options to reduce your occurrence of acne as well as reduce the likelihood of permanent scarring.

Acne Treatment - Medical Grade Facial and Skin Care

Our Physician Assistant is an expert in the field of skincare health and can treat acne with a medical grade facial, which may include acne drainage and extraction. Extractions ease the pain of acne and reduce the likelihood that the cyst will leave a scar. Medical grade skin products are used to remove bacteria, cleanse and hydrate the skin. A medical grade facial will leave the skin feeling clean, fresh, clear and moisturized. A medical grade facial is often the first and most conservative step in treating acne. We will teach you skin management strategies so that you can continue proper skincare at home.

Acne Treatment - Chemical Peel

Chemical peel for Acne: Chemical skin peels are a classic cosmetic procedure to renew and revitalize skin. Chemical peels use an acidic solution to peel away the most superficial layers of skin, unclogging pores and reducing surface acne. The peel works by forcing cellular turnover, revealing new skin cells that have improved tone and texture.

The VI Peel: The VI Peel is an excellent option for treating acne and addressing lingering dark spots. The VI Peel is intended to target sun damage, melasma and acne scarring. After the application, skin peeling begins 24-48 hours and lasts 6-7 days. Typical results are visible after one treatment and can last for several months. This is a great option for acne prone skin.

It is important to note that skin peels are not recommended for individuals that have a known allergy to aspirin, have active cold sores, those who are pregnant, are receiving chemotherapy or have had recent waxing in the treatment area.

Acne Treatment - Laser

Laser treatment for Acne: Laser therapies reduce the amount of surface bacteria on the skin. The laser gets deep into the root of the pore to kill bacteria and reduce the likelihood of acne formation. The laser treatment is ideal for treating active acne and pustules. In addition, laser treatments can reduce the appearance of acne scarring and dark spots that have been left as a result of prior acne.

Acne Scar treatment: For individuals who have scarring from previous acne, there are viable treatment options to improve the texture and appearance of the skin. It is important to note that scar treatments are typically done in cases where there is no active acne present. Scar treatment can diminish acne scars that cause depressions in the skin and those that have left raised acne scars.

Acne Scar Treatment - Lasers

There are many options to handle acne scars including: laser, sublative treatments, Fractionated CO2 laser, chemical peelsfacial fillers, and minor skin surgeries. The type of treatment will depend upon the type of scarring that is present. For example, a scar that leaves a facial depression would benefit from a filler, adding volume to the skin and reducing the depression. Your scar management will depend on the type and extent of your scar formation.
