Types of Butt Lifts
A butt lift procedure can be performed with or without fat transfer. The butt lift with fat transfer, takes fat tissue from the flanks or waist and uses it to fill the volume in the buttocks. During the initial consultation, patients have the opportunity to discuss their concerns, desires and ultimate goals for the cosmetic procedure.
The appropriate butt lift technique will be determined based on the patient’s buttock size and shape, amount of fat available for liposuction, goals, activity level and skin elasticity. The butt lift with fat transfer procedure is known as the Brazilian Butt Lift. This procedure first utilizes liposuction to remove fat tissue from the waist or flanks. The surgeon removes enough fat tissue to fill the buttocks and give volume. The area of liposuction is specifically chosen to optimize body contouring and define the waist. With a better defined waist, the end result of the butt lift is more recognizable and enhanced.
Liposuction is performed through small incisions in the skin. A thin hollow tube is inserted through the incisions to loosen excess fat tissue in a controlled manner. The fat is then suctioned out of the body through the tube, using a surgical vacuum. The surgeon will likely remove more fat tissue than will actually be injected into the buttocks. Next, the fat tissue and fluids that were removed are processed and readied for injection. The surgeon uses a special cannula to inject the fat into the buttocks through small injection sites all over the buttocks.
The results of the Brazilian Butt Lift are visible immediately after the procedure, but the final results may take up to one year from the surgery. The reason for this duration of time is that it takes a while for the fat tissue to settle permanently*. This surgical procedure provides natural looking and natural feeling results. It is important to note that some of the initial volume after fat grafting will decrease over time, as the fat is absorbed by the body, leaving 60-80% retention. Additionally, this fat is susceptible to fat loss or gain, just like any other part of the body.

2. Butt Lift with Fat Transfer
Another option for the butt lift procedure is to undergo a butt lift without fat transfer. This option is ideal for individuals who have lost a lot of weight, leaving loose skin and a sagging appearance.
Incisions are made along the thong line, so that healing is discreet. The inner tissues are supported with incisions, excess skin is removed and the buttocks is redraped. This leaves a tighter and lifted appearance, with a more youthful and defined contour. This option is similar to having a tummy tuck over the abdomen, tightening the rear end, for firmer contours.
Some individuals benefit from the implantation of a buttock implant in order to provide the fullness and projection desired. First, an incision is made, through which to place the implant. The incision can be made toward the top on both sides of the upper buttock, toward the bottom in the gluteal creases, between the cheek creases, or down the center of the tailbone. The length and location of the incision is dependent on the desired goals and surgical requirements for the placing the implant.
Then, a silicone implant is inserted and positioned by the surgeon. The surgeon ensures the position of the implant is symmetrical on each side. The method for inserting and positioning the implant depends on the implant type, the patient’s body type and the surgeon’s clinical expertise.
The incisions are closed with sutures and the area is bandaged for healing. The results of this procedure are visible immediately, but will improve as surgical swelling diminishes. The results of implant placement are permanent*.
What to Expect Before, During and After
The patient is given anesthesia to ensure patient comfort and safety during the surgical procedure. The butt lift procedure takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete. The recovery takes 2-4 weeks and great attention should be paid to properly care for the healing tissues.
For patients undergoing the Brazilian Butt Lift with fat transfer, the patient is provided with a compression garment to support areas treated with liposuction and promote healing. The compression garment will keep healing tissues supported and help to reduce swelling to the surgical area.
The first few weeks will require the patient to avoid prolonged sitting positions. The patient will need to utilize a cushion or pillow behind the legs and buttocks in order to protect the healing tissues. When sleeping, the patient will be required to sleep on his or her side or stomach, in order to keep pressure off the buttocks.
If undergoing buttock augmentation with implant placement, the support garment will be worn for 2-3 weeks. This helps the skin lay properly and provides support to the augmented tissue. Final results are visible in approximately 3 months, as much of the surgical swelling is resolved, and the implants will have settled into their normal position. Generally, after either procedure, patients are able to resume exercise within 6-8 weeks after surgery.
