Chin Augmentation & Implants

Boca Raton, Palm Beach Florida

Chin implants can be surgically placed to refine your jawline and enhance your profile in a minor procedure with very satisfying results. When your chin is out of proportion, other features like your nose or brow or neck can look more prominent than they truly are.

Chin implants restore harmony to the face, giving a lift to the neck, and balancing the relationship between the nose, chin and brow. Many patients who get chin implants start by inquiring about nose surgery. They see the imbalance but once in the consultation, they see the possibilities and how chin implants can make a subtly beautiful difference.

How to Chin Implants Work?

A well-defined chin gives facial balance and plays a major role in your profile. When you examine your face in a mirror, oftentimes your eye is drawn to the nose, eyes or mouth. However, the shape of the chin can really offset a larger nose and shape the jawline. Having a weak chin can cast you as a weaker person. This perception can be found in all aspects of life including the workplace, social settings and romantic relationships. For a man, a strong jawline and chin exudes masculinity and strength. For a women, a strong chin and profile exudes confidence and poise.

Fortunately, the size and shape of your chin can be enhanced to subtly change your appearance from that of weakness to that of strength and confidence.

More about the Chin Implant or Augmentation Procedure

A chin augmentation can be done at the same time as a nose surgery, facelifteyelid surgery or other procedure, restoring balance to the face and creating a harmonious balance. During a chin augmentation procedure, an implant is placed over the natural chin, creating definition and shape.

About the Chin Augmentation Procedure

The chin augmentation procedure takes approximately one hour to perform. The surgeon can approach the surgery through two different incisions. In one approach, the surgeon creates a small incision along the natural crease line under the chin. In the other approach, the surgeon creates an incision inside the mouth, where the gum meets the lower lip. Depending on the type of implant to be placed and your existing facial anatomy, your surgeon will decide which approach will be best suited to your needs. Next, by stretching the soft tissues around the chin, the surgeon creates a pocket over the jaw bone, creating space for the implant to be inserted. The appropriate implant is then inserted and positioned properly.

Once the implant is correctly positioned, the skin is closed with fine sutures. When the surgery is performed through the underside of the chin, there is a small scar, but because of the location it is usually unnoticeable. When the incision is made through the mouth, no scarring can be visible.

Another form of chin augmentation is that of chin reduction surgery. In this surgery, an already large or protruding chin is transformed to one that is more visually pleasing and harmonious to the face. In chin reduction surgery, the incisions are also either made under the chin or inside the mouth. Through these incisions, the surgeon is able to access the chin and sculpt the bone to a more pleasing size and shape. This procedure can be more extensive and take anywhere from one to three hours.

What to Expect with Chin Augmentation

Your surgical treatment will begin with a consultation with Dr. Scott Ennis, where you will explain your concerns and ultimate goals for surgery. The surgeon will be able to answer any questions you may have in regards to the procedure and recovery. In addition, your surgeon will discuss the various sizes and shapes of the actual chin implant. The chin implant is made of synthetic material that feels just like the natural tissues found in the face. The implants are made in a wide range of sizes and shapes, which allows for optimal customization for each individual face.

For the surgery, you will be given twilight or general anesthesia to ensure optimal comfort and safety during the procedure. Once the surgeon has finished the procedure, he will apply a dressing to the chin for support and protection. You will wear the dressing for two to three days. After the procedure, you will experience some discomfort, which can be controlled with prescribed pain medication. You will have some bruising and swelling around the chin for one week to ten days.

Because of the surgical location, chewing will be difficult, so you will likely eat a soft food and liquid diet for a couple of days. You can experience some tightness over the chin, which will subside after a week. Vigorous activity should be avoided for the first few weeks, as your body is healing from the surgery. Right after the bandages are removed, you will see the new shape of your chin and your new facial profile. However, because of swelling and bruising, you will not yet fully appreciate your new look. After six weeks, most of the swelling will be gone and you will be able to fully enjoy your surgical outcomes.
