Laser Skin Resurfacing

Boca Raton, Palm Beach Florida

Laser resurfacing offers an excellent treatment to address the tone and texture of the skin. By utilizing light energy, laser resurfacing effectively stimulates collagen production by stimulating the body’s natural healing processes deep in the dermis layer of the skin. This process strengthens the skin for a healthy, youthful and supple appearance. Laser resurfacing improves the tightness and brightness of skin tone, undoing the damage from sun, pollution and the environment.

Our daily exposure to sun, pollution and environmental contaminants works against our goals of achieving and maintaining healthy, youthful, and supple skin. Combining these environmental conditions and the natural aging process, the tone and texture of your skin suffers. Fortunately, advances in technology have yielded laser techniques to rejuvenate the appearance of damaged skin.

The laser stimulates your body’s natural healing deep in the dermis layer of skin, strengthening the skin through collagen production. This improved strength yields skin that appears brighter and tighter.

With the advances in technology, laser resurfacing techniques have gained great popularity. CO2 laser resurfacing is a well-documented and long-standing esthetic procedure that is meant to improve the appearance and texture of the skin. The CO2 laser has been utilized since the 1990s and still remains a very popular treatment for facial rejuvenation.

How CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing Works

This approach uses laser technology to destroy superficial damaged skin cells, in order to allow the natural healing process to bring forth beautiful, undamaged skin. Lasers are sources of high intensity light with varying wavelengths. The laser uses light energy to create microscopic damage in the skin, triggering your natural healing process. By destroying the damaged areas of skin, your skin can regenerate for skin that will look more youthful and refreshed.

The CO2 laser is designed to remove the upper layer of the skin epidermis and stimulate the dermis. In doing this, sunspots, fine lines and small wrinkles are also reduced. Laser resurfacing stimulates the creation of new skin at the epidermis layer (the top layer of skin). The CO2 laser is an aggressive and effective treatment. Because the most superficial layers of the skin are removed, new cellular growth can heal the skin back to a youthful glow.

Pulsed CO2 lasers have been successfully shown to reduce and remove facial wrinkles, acne scars and sun-damaged skin. CO2 laser is typically considered the gold standard of facial rejuvenation systems.

CO2 lasers are effective at treating superficial skin conditions including:

  • Skin tone and texture
  • Sun damaged skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Age spots

The Laser Resurfacing Experience

CO2 laser resurfacing uses short, concentrated beams of light to precisely remove skin layer by layer. You may benefit from small, individual areas on your face, or you may want to treat your entire face. For small areas (like wrinkles around the mouth), the procedure may only take 10-15 minutes. A full facial treatment can take up to 1 hour. Topical anesthesia is typically applied prior to treatment.

Side effects of Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment

Side effects of treatment include facial tenderness, redness, swelling and scarring. Redness and tenderness can last several weeks, while new skin grows over the area where damaged skin was removed. This type of laser resurfacing is not appropriate for all skin types, as change in pigmentation can occur with darker skin tones.

This procedure requires some recovery time. Although it is okay for you to go out in public after having this procedure, you will look as though you had something done for about 5 days. You should allow yourself several days to recover after having CO2 treatment. In this recovery period, the old, damaged skin will slough off and the new skin can be revealed. It is important to follow the recommended skin care regimen that our team will instruct. You will need to ensure that the area treated remains clean and moisturized. Although your recovery may only be 5-6 days, you will need to actively care for your skin for a couple of weeks. Once your skin heals, you will be able to wear oil-free makeup to reduce the appearance of redness. This redness generally fades over several weeks.

It is normal to have some swelling after you have skin resurfacing with a CO2 laser. You may be directed to take steroid medication or utilize ice packs to manage any swelling. It is very important to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin while it heals. Ideally, you should be wearing sunscreen everyday regardless of undergoing facial rejuvenation.
