What to Expect During Breast Reduction Surgery
During surgery, the board certified plastic surgeon at Ennis Plastic Surgery will make one or more incisions in the breast to remove the extra tissue and skin. In some cases, the nipple and areola must also be removed in order to reposition on the breast. If there is no excess skin and the issue is only extra fat in the breast, then the surgeon may opt to use liposuction. The incision is then closed with stitches. The patient should expect general anesthesia for the operation to last anywhere from 3-5 hours. Barring any complications, the patient can expect to go home after the breast reduction surgery.
In some cases, patients may also have a breast lift which is a common procedure for women who have large, drooping breasts. In this scenario, it is typical for only skin to be removed rather than fatty tissue.
What to Expect During Breast Reduction Recovery
Once the operation is over the breasts will be wrapped securely with gauze, and the patient will wear a special supportive bra. Stitches will be removed in 1-2 weeks following surgery.
It is typical for patients to experience the following:
- Pain
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Visible scarring
Note that wearing the supportive bra will speed up recovery time. Most patients can resume normal activity within two weeks, but should avoid strenuous activity for three to four weeks.
Additional Considerations for Breast Reduction
Many women who opt for breast reduction surgery are satisfied with the improved look of their breasts. The operation results are considered permanent, but the breasts may increase in size in the event that the patient gains weight or becomes pregnant.
