Understanding Dermal Fillers
With time, changes in skin elasticity, soft tissue and facial support can alter cheek and lip fullness and deepen folds. Filler adds volume in selected tissues; it does not stop aging or remove excess skin.
A muscle relaxer addresses a different mechanism: the activity that contributes to expression lines. Some people discuss both, while others benefit from a different approach.

Smile lines
Nasolabial folds run from the sides of the nose toward the mouth. Treatment planning considers nearby cheek support as well as the fold itself.
Marionette lines & mouth corners
Changes around the mouth can involve both volume and tissue position. Assessment determines what filler may improve and where it has limits.
Pre-jowl folds & chin
The region beside the chin may show loss of support or a hollow. Product choice and suitability require an anatomical assessment.
Cheeks & lips
Different gels may be used for cheek support, lip volume or fine lines around the mouth. A product intended for one area is not automatically suitable for another.

Understanding Filler Families
Juvéderm
Juvéderm fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that binds water. The family includes different gels for different concerns; the formulation, amount and placement affect the result.
XC, Ultra XC & Voluma XC
Juvéderm XC is used for selected facial folds. Ultra XC includes a lip-augmentation indication. Voluma XC is used for deeper cheek-volume support and other specifically approved areas; it is not a general lip filler.
Perlane / Restylane Lyft
Perlane is an earlier product name associated with the Restylane family. Current Restylane Lyft information describes selected facial folds, cheek volume and other approved uses. Discuss the exact product, rather than choosing by a familiar name alone.
Radiesse
Radiesse contains calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres in a gel carrier. It provides initial volume and supports collagen production. Its characteristics, uses and options for managing unwanted results differ from those of HA gels.
Restylane Silk
Silk is an HA gel designed for lip augmentation and lines around the mouth. Its formulation includes lidocaine to help with injection discomfort. Explore the lip-filler guide for volume and definition choices.

A Plan Before a Product
Talk about your goals
Describe the areas that concern you and the degree of change you would like. The assessment considers your face at rest and in movement, skin quality, volume and previous treatments.
Review your health
Bring your medication and supplement list. Discuss allergies, prior reactions, cold sores, recent procedures, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any active skin infection. Do not stop a prescribed medicine unless the clinician who manages it advises you to.
Choose the treatment together
Your provider explains the product, the proposed areas, expected changes, limits, risks and cost. Ask whether a proposed use is FDA-approved for that product or off-label, and what that distinction means for your plan.
Plan comfort and follow-up
Numbing may be offered depending on the treatment; some fillers contain lidocaine. Confirm aftercare, when to assess the result and who to contact if something does not feel right.

What to Expect with Filler Treatment
Assessment
Discuss your desired change, medical history and prior injectables. The clinician evaluates the face and explains the suggested product, amount, risks and cost.
Comfort & injections
A topical or local anesthetic may be used; some fillers already contain lidocaine. The practice describes many filler treatments as taking about 20–40 minutes, depending on the areas involved.
Aftercare
You may notice an immediate change, but swelling can distort the early appearance. Follow the treatment-specific instructions and the recommended review schedule.
After your visit
Give the Result Time to Settle
The first few days
Fullness can be visible immediately after filler, but early swelling can exaggerate the result. Bruising and tenderness may be noticeable. Allow time before important events and follow your personal aftercare instructions.
Your follow-up
Review the settled result with your provider before deciding whether more treatment is useful. Contact the team promptly about unexpected changes instead of trying to massage or adjust the area yourself.
Maintaining the result
Temporary fillers are absorbed over time. Duration depends on the product, location and individual response. Expression-relaxing injections also wear off; your provider helps plan any repeat visits.
An informed choice
Know the Risks Before Treatment
Temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness and redness can follow filler treatment. Infection, lumps, asymmetry or delayed inflammation can occur. Some filler materials can be difficult to remove.
Symptoms that need urgent attention
Rare injection into a blood vessel can damage skin or cause blindness or stroke. Seek immediate medical attention for unusual pain, skin turning white, gray or blue, vision changes or stroke symptoms after treatment.
Your product matters
Review the specific product’s patient information with your injector, including allergies, precautions and whether treatment should be postponed. Results and recovery differ between people.

How do fillers differ from relaxers?
Fillers add volume in selected tissues. Relaxers reduce selected muscle activity. They can address different parts of a concern, but neither is automatically the right choice for every line.
Can fillers replace a facelift?
A filler plan cannot remove excess skin or reposition deeper tissues like surgery. Discuss facial surgery options if laxity is the main concern.
How long will filler last?
The product, treatment area, amount and individual response affect duration. Review the expected range for your particular plan and assess the result before scheduling more.
Can I combine products?
Different formulations may be proposed for different areas. Each has its own indications and risks, so ask why every part of the plan is useful.
How is filler priced?
The product and amount used, often measured in syringes, influence cost. You will need an individual quote after assessment.
