Volume, hydration & support

Understanding Juvéderm Fillers

Hyaluronic acid, often shortened to HA, is a sugar found naturally in the body that attracts and holds water. Juvéderm uses a modified form of HA in an injectable gel to add volume in selected tissues.

As facial fat, skin and underlying support change with age, folds may deepen and cheeks or lips may appear less full. Filler can address some of these changes. It does not remove excess skin or relax the muscles responsible for expression lines.

The collection contains gels with different characteristics. A gel selected for deep cheek support is not automatically appropriate for the lips. The dermal filler guide explains how product families differ.

Expression lines and volume involve different concerns

Hyaluronic-acid filler supports volume in selected tissues. This illustration contrasts that goal with treatment for movement-related lines; it is not an injection plan or a before-and-after result.

Your goals

What Would You Like to Address?

Facial folds

Lines extending from the nose toward the mouth can involve nearby volume changes as well as the crease itself. An assessment considers the surrounding face before recommending treatment.

Lip fullness & definition

Some people want to restore volume lost over time; others want to explore a change to naturally thinner lips. The lip filler guide explains fullness, border definition and proportion.

Cheek volume

Selected gels are designed for deeper support in the cheeks. The amount of change depends on your anatomy, skin and treatment goals.

A balanced overall plan

If loose skin is the main concern, more filler may not be the answer. Compare facial surgery and a liquid facelift with the team.

Choose the Gel for the Area

Ultra XC & Ultra Plus XC

These HA gels have uses for selected facial wrinkles and folds. Ultra XC also has a lip-augmentation indication in adults over 21. Ask which formulation and treatment area are proposed.

Volbella XC

Volbella XC is an option for lip augmentation and perioral lines in adults over 21. Its separate under-eye indication requires an assessment and appropriately trained treating doctor.

Vollure XC

Vollure XC treats moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, in adults over 21. Its formulation and intended uses differ from lip-focused options.

Voluma XC

Voluma XC is used for age-related cheek volume loss and has additional approved indications for the chin and temples in adults over 21. Treatment planning remains specific to each area.

Volux XC

Volux XC has an approved use for improving moderate to severe loss of jawline definition in adults over 21. Ask about suitability and current availability during consultation.

What does “XC” mean?

XC formulations include lidocaine to help with injection discomfort. This does not make treatment painless or suitable for someone with a lidocaine allergy.

A Plan Before a Product

Talk about your goals

Describe the areas that concern you and the degree of change you would like. The assessment considers your face at rest and in movement, skin quality, volume and previous treatments.

Review your health

Bring your medication and supplement list. Discuss allergies, prior reactions, cold sores, recent procedures, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any active skin infection. Do not stop a prescribed medicine unless the clinician who manages it advises you to.

Choose the treatment together

Your provider explains the product, the proposed areas, expected changes, limits, risks and cost. Ask whether a proposed use is FDA-approved for that product or off-label, and what that distinction means for your plan.

Plan comfort and follow-up

Numbing may be offered depending on the treatment; some fillers contain lidocaine. Confirm aftercare, when to assess the result and who to contact if something does not feel right.

The treatment visit

What to Expect with Juvéderm

Assessment & preparation

Your provider reviews the treatment area, discusses the amount and expected change, and cleans the skin. Tell the team about prior fillers, recent dental work, laser treatments or chemical peels, and any history of cold sores.

Comfort & treatment

XC formulations contain lidocaine. Additional numbing may be offered. The practice describes many filler treatments as taking about 20–30 minutes, depending on the areas involved; allow more time for the consultation.

Aftercare & review

Early fullness can include swelling. Ask when to assess the settled result and whether a later review is recommended. Avoid adding more filler before your provider has evaluated the response.

After your visit

Give the Result Time to Settle

The first few days

Swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness, firmness or bumps can follow treatment. These usually improve over time, but some can last several weeks. Plan ahead for important events and contact your provider about persistent or worsening symptoms.

Your follow-up

Follow the instructions for your specific product. Juvéderm advises minimizing strenuous exercise, extensive heat or sun exposure, and alcohol for the first 24 hours. Discuss when to resume makeup and skin care.

Maintaining the result

The gel is gradually absorbed. Longevity depends on the formulation, area, treatment and individual response. Review the settled result and your goals before planning a maintenance visit.

Expectations & longevity

A Result That Fits Your Face

A change in volume may be visible immediately, but swelling can temporarily exaggerate it. Give the area time to settle before judging symmetry or deciding whether more treatment is useful.

How long can it last?

Longevity differs by gel and location. With optimal treatment, manufacturer information describes up to one year for selected lip fillers, up to 18 months for Vollure XC in facial folds and up to two years for Voluma XC in cheeks. These are product-specific expectations, not guaranteed timelines.

Explore patient results

Ask to review patient examples relevant to your concern at your consultation, including which product was used and when photographs were taken. Individual results vary.

An informed choice

Know the Risks Before Treatment

Temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness and redness can follow filler treatment. Infection, lumps, asymmetry or delayed inflammation can occur. Some filler materials can be difficult to remove.

Juvéderm products should not be used in people with certain severe allergies, including a history of anaphylaxis, or allergies to lidocaine or the bacterial proteins used in manufacture. Discuss all prior filler reactions. Treatment should be postponed at infected or inflamed sites; safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been established.

Symptoms that need urgent attention

Rare injection into a blood vessel can damage skin or cause blindness or stroke. Seek immediate medical attention for unusual pain, skin turning white, gray or blue, vision changes or stroke symptoms after treatment.

Your product matters

Review the specific product’s patient information with your injector, including allergies, precautions and whether treatment should be postponed. Results and recovery differ between people.

Planning your treatment

Your Questions, Answered

Is Juvéderm the same as Botox?

No. Juvéderm adds volume. Botox reduces selected muscle activity. The two can address different concerns within a personalized plan.

Am I a candidate?

A consultation considers your age, goals, allergies, health, skin and prior treatments. Approved ages differ by formulation and use, so the exact product matters.

Will treatment look natural?

Discuss the degree of change you want, including what you want to keep. Product choice and facial assessment influence the outcome, but no particular result can be promised.

Can Juvéderm be dissolved?

A clinician may use hyaluronidase to break down an HA filler when appropriate. This requires assessment, has its own risks, and does not guarantee complete reversal of a result or complication.

How much will I need?

The product, area and planned change determine the amount and cost. An individualized quote follows assessment; treatment should not be chosen by syringe count alone.
