A personal approach

Your goals. Your comfort.

Donna Ennis, ARNP, evaluates your facial contours, tissue support and desired change before recommending a filler. Product selection matters as much as the area you wish to treat.

Radiesse combines an initial filling effect with stimulation of the body’s collagen production. Its uses, limitations and management of unwanted results differ from those of hyaluronic-acid fillers.

Two parts of the response

Understanding Radiesse

Radiesse contains calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a gel carrier. The gel provides initial volume. The microspheres support a response in which the body produces collagen, a structural protein in connective tissue.

Over time, the carrier gel and CaHA are absorbed. The collagen response contributes to the effect, but it does not stop aging or make the result permanent. The degree and duration of improvement vary.

This differs from an HA product such as Juvéderm. Radiesse cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase in the same way as HA gels, so careful product selection and planning are especially important.

Facial & hand concerns

Areas to Discuss

Smile lines

Nasolabial folds run from the sides of the nose toward the mouth. Radiesse is approved for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, including these lines.

Mouth corners & marionette lines

Volume changes below the mouth may contribute to lines or a downturned appearance. Assessment distinguishes lost support from muscle activity and loose skin.

Pre-jowl folds & chin creases

Hollows beside the chin and creases across it need an anatomical assessment. Radiesse (+) has a separate jawline-contour indication for adults over 21.

The backs of the hands

Radiesse has an indication for volume loss on the backs of the hands. Explore hand rejuvenation and discuss whether volume, skin quality or both are the concern.

Product-specific choices

Radiesse and Radiesse (+) have different formulations and indications. Newer uses, including diluted treatment for décolleté wrinkles, require specific training; availability and suitability should be confirmed at consultation.

Lip volume needs a different discussion

Radiesse is not a routine lip-augmentation filler. If fullness or definition is your goal, begin with the lip filler guide and discuss an appropriate product.

Considering treatment

Is Radiesse Right for Your Goals?

You may be exploring ways to replace selected areas of volume, soften facial folds or improve the appearance of the backs of the hands without surgery. A consultation considers the skin, underlying tissues and how much change you want.

Know what filler can do

Radiesse can address selected volume-related concerns. It will not remove excess skin or provide the tissue repositioning of a facelift.

Discuss previous treatment

Tell your clinician which fillers or other treatments you have had, where they were placed and when. Bring available records if the product is uncertain.

A Plan Before a Product

Talk about your goals

Describe the areas that concern you and the degree of change you would like. The assessment considers your face at rest and in movement, skin quality, volume and previous treatments.

Review your health

Bring your medication and supplement list. Discuss allergies, prior reactions, cold sores, recent procedures, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any active skin infection. Do not stop a prescribed medicine unless the clinician who manages it advises you to.

Choose the treatment together

Your provider explains the product, the proposed areas, expected changes, limits, risks and cost. Ask whether a proposed use is FDA-approved for that product or off-label, and what that distinction means for your plan.

Plan comfort and follow-up

Numbing may be offered depending on the treatment; some fillers contain lidocaine. Confirm aftercare, when to assess the result and who to contact if something does not feel right.

What to Expect with Radiesse

Consultation & planning

Discuss the area, desired change and relevant health history. The clinician explains the exact formulation, expected benefits, limitations, risks and cost.

Comfort & injections

A small needle or cannula may be used according to the treatment plan. Radiesse (+) contains lidocaine; ask about the chosen product and numbing. Treatment often takes about 20–30 minutes, depending on the areas involved; allow more time for consultation.

Instructions & review

Initial fullness may include swelling. You receive aftercare instructions and a plan for checking the result. Avoid pressing or massaging the treated area unless specifically instructed.

Recovery & longevity

After Radiesse Treatment

Allow for visible recovery

Bruising, swelling, tenderness, itching or redness may follow injections. Some people return to routine activities quickly, but plan ahead for social events and follow your provider’s advice.

Give changes time

An initial filling effect and a longer-term tissue response are different stages. The final appearance cannot be judged solely from the first day.

Review before repeating

Facial-fold improvement can last a year or longer for some people; location, treatment and individual response matter. Reassessment determines whether more treatment is appropriate.

An informed choice

Know the Risks Before Treatment

Temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness and redness can follow filler treatment. Infection, lumps, asymmetry or delayed inflammation can occur. Some filler materials can be difficult to remove.

Radiesse should not be used in people with certain severe allergies, hypersensitivity to its components or bleeding disorders. Radiesse (+) also contains lidocaine. Discuss pregnancy, breastfeeding, prior fillers and skin infection with your clinician before treatment.

Symptoms that need urgent attention

Rare injection into a blood vessel can damage skin or cause blindness or stroke. Seek immediate medical attention for unusual pain, skin turning white, gray or blue, vision changes or stroke symptoms after treatment.

Your product matters

Review the specific product’s patient information with your injector, including allergies, precautions and whether treatment should be postponed. Results and recovery differ between people.

Planning your treatment

Your Questions, Answered

Is Radiesse an HA filler?

No. It is made with calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres in a gel carrier. Juvéderm and several other fillers use hyaluronic acid.

Can Radiesse be dissolved?

Hyaluronidase does not dissolve CaHA in the way it breaks down HA filler. Contact an experienced clinician about any unwanted result; management depends on the problem and timing.

Is it permanent?

No. The material is absorbed over time, and aging continues. The collagen response does not make the result permanent.

Can it be used for my hands?

Radiesse has an approved use for volume loss on the backs of the hands. A consultation is needed to distinguish volume loss from pigmentation, texture or other concerns.

What is Radiesse (+)?

Radiesse (+) includes lidocaine to help reduce treatment discomfort and has product-specific approved uses. Tell your provider about allergies to lidocaine or similar anesthetics.
