Donna Ennis, ARNP, evaluates the lips and surrounding tissues together. Your consultation explores whether your priority is fullness, definition, lines around the mouth or a combination.
Volbella XC is one option within the Juvéderm family. The right choice depends on your anatomy, health, previous treatments and desired change.

Understanding Volbella XC
Juvéderm Volbella XC is a hyaluronic-acid gel with lidocaine. It is FDA-approved for lip augmentation and correction of perioral rhytids—lines around the mouth—in adults over 21.
Lip fullness and lines around the lips are different concerns. Naturally thinner lips, changes with age and the condition of the surrounding skin can all influence a plan. A consultation looks at the lip border, body, Cupid’s bow and overall facial proportions.
Topical skin care can help surface hydration, while a filler adds volume in selected tissues. Volbella does not stop aging or replace every treatment for skin texture. Learn more in the lip filler guide.
What you want to change
Two Related Goals
Lip fullness
The aim may be a modest increase in fullness or restoration of volume lost over time. Your provider discusses the amount of change and how it relates to the upper and lower lips.
Lines around the mouth
Perioral lines sit in the surrounding skin rather than in the lip body itself. Their depth, skin quality and relationship to movement help determine whether filler is appropriate.
A separate under-eye use
Volbella XC also has an approved indication for under-eye hollows in adults over 21. This is a separate assessment for an appropriately trained doctor; suitability for lip treatment does not establish suitability under the eyes.
VYCROSS technology
How the Gel Is Formulated
Volbella XC uses VYCROSS technology, which combines HA of different molecular weights into a cross-linked gel. Cross-linking changes how the gel holds together and is broken down. The formulation contributes to its handling and duration.
Different gels, different roles
Vollure XC is designed for selected facial folds, while Voluma XC includes deeper cheek-volume uses. Sharing a product family does not make these gels interchangeable.
What the research can tell you
Clinical studies supporting approval assessed lip fullness, perioral lines and side effects over time. Manufacturer information describes lip results lasting up to one year with optimal treatment. Your response may be shorter, and a later touch-up may be part of a treatment plan.

A Plan Before a Product
Talk about your goals
Describe the areas that concern you and the degree of change you would like. The assessment considers your face at rest and in movement, skin quality, volume and previous treatments.
Review your health
Bring your medication and supplement list. Discuss allergies, prior reactions, cold sores, recent procedures, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any active skin infection. Do not stop a prescribed medicine unless the clinician who manages it advises you to.
Choose the treatment together
Your provider explains the product, the proposed areas, expected changes, limits, risks and cost. Ask whether a proposed use is FDA-approved for that product or off-label, and what that distinction means for your plan.
Plan comfort and follow-up
Numbing may be offered depending on the treatment; some fillers contain lidocaine. Confirm aftercare, when to assess the result and who to contact if something does not feel right.
The treatment visit
What to Expect with Volbella XC
Assessment & preparation
Your provider reviews the treatment area, discusses the amount and expected change, and cleans the skin. Tell the team about prior fillers, recent dental work, laser treatments or chemical peels, and any history of cold sores.
Comfort & treatment
XC formulations contain lidocaine. Additional numbing may be offered. The practice describes many filler treatments as taking about 20–30 minutes, depending on the areas involved; allow more time for the consultation.
Aftercare & review
Early fullness can include swelling. Ask when to assess the settled result and whether a later review is recommended. Avoid adding more filler before your provider has evaluated the response.
After your visit
Give the Result Time to Settle
The first few days
Swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness, firmness or bumps can follow treatment. These usually improve over time, but some can last several weeks. Plan ahead for important events and contact your provider about persistent or worsening symptoms.
Your follow-up
Follow the instructions for your specific product. Juvéderm advises minimizing strenuous exercise, extensive heat or sun exposure, and alcohol for the first 24 hours. Discuss when to resume makeup and skin care.
Maintaining the result
The gel is gradually absorbed. Longevity depends on the formulation, area, treatment and individual response. Review the settled result and your goals before planning a maintenance visit.
An informed choice
Know the Risks Before Treatment
Temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness and redness can follow filler treatment. Infection, lumps, asymmetry or delayed inflammation can occur. Some filler materials can be difficult to remove.
Juvéderm products should not be used in people with certain severe allergies, including a history of anaphylaxis, or allergies to lidocaine or the bacterial proteins used in manufacture. Discuss all prior filler reactions. Treatment should be postponed at infected or inflamed sites; safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been established.
Symptoms that need urgent attention
Rare injection into a blood vessel can damage skin or cause blindness or stroke. Seek immediate medical attention for unusual pain, skin turning white, gray or blue, vision changes or stroke symptoms after treatment.
Your product matters
Review the specific product’s patient information with your injector, including allergies, precautions and whether treatment should be postponed. Results and recovery differ between people.

Planning your treatment
Your Questions, Answered
Will Volbella make my lips much larger?
The desired change is discussed before treatment. A plan may focus on subtle fullness or definition, but your provider must explain what your anatomy allows. Swelling initially can make the lips look larger than the settled result.
How long does Volbella last?
Lip results may last up to one year with optimal treatment. The amount, individual response and treatment plan affect duration. It is not a permanent implant.
Does it hurt?
The gel contains lidocaine, and additional numbing may be offered. You can still feel pressure, stinging or tenderness; tell your provider about your comfort and any anesthetic allergies.
How does it compare with Ultra XC?
Both have lip-related indications, but their gel properties differ. Discuss whether your goal is fullness, definition or lines around the mouth; a brand name alone does not determine the best fit.
Can I have a lip lift instead?
A lip lift changes the relationship between the nose and upper lip through surgery. It has different aims, recovery and risks from an injectable filler.
What should I share before treatment?
Mention cold sores, allergies, previous filler, recent dental or skin procedures, pregnancy or breastfeeding and all medicines or supplements. Your clinician will decide whether to treat, modify the plan or postpone.
