Otoplasty Ear Surgery

Cosmetic Ear Surgery in Boca Raton, FL.

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is a surgical procedure to reposition and shape the ears. Although it may seem like an odd surgery, it is much more popular than you may think. Unfortunately, for individuals with large or protruding ears, ridicule and teasing can greatly diminish self-confidence.

Many patients seeking this ear surgery have endured teasing about their ears and are able to reclaim self-esteem with their positive results. Fortunately, corrective cosmetic ear surgery can restore confidence with a relatively simple surgical procedure.

When to consider Otoplasty

There are many facets that make up your facial appearance, working together to create your look. These include: proportion, symmetry, size, shape and texture. Beyond the facial features that seem to draw the most attention like eyes, cheeks, nose, and lips, having symmetrical and well-formed ears can give the face just the right amount of balance. Well positioned and proportionate ears can make your entire appearance more refined and harmonious. When disharmony is noticed in the ears, otoplasty may be a surgical option to bring them back into balance with the rest of the facial features.

Otoplasty at Ennis Plastic Surgery may be the right procedure if you have:

  • protruding ears
  • large ears
  • abnormally shaped ears
  • oddly positioned ears
  • defect in ear structure that is present at birth
  • an injury that caused one or both ears to become misshapen
  • embarrassment due to your ear shape, size or appearance

Candidates for Otoplasty

The reason some people are born with prominent ears is because of less than optimal development of certain ear folds or the angle of attachment against the skull. People can have a varying degree of protrusion on the external ear, which the surgeon will recognize and correct for. Ear surgery can be performed at any age after the ears have reached their full size and completed growing. Typically, this is after age 5 years and anytime through adulthood.

Otoplasty one One or Two Ears

Otoplasty is most often performed on both ears in order to ensure symmetry and balance. However, in some cases, such as with injury or birth defect, it may only be necessary to perform surgery on one ear. Note that the surgery will change the outward appearance of the ear, but it will not affect your hearing. The function of your hearing is held within the ear, but the external shape helps to funnel the sound into the ear canal. This surgery will not impede your ability to funnel sound into the ear.

Otoplasty Techniques

The specific otoplasty techniques that will be performed depend on what type of correction is needed. Ear surgery begins with an incision right behind the ear, which allows the surgeon to access cartilage and skin that will be reshaped.

If incisions are need on the front of the ear, they are positioned within the ear folds, so after they heal, the scars are nearly invisible. Your surgeon will remove the appropriate amount of cartilage and skin to achieve the desired ear shape. The surgeon may trim the cartilage into a more pleasing shape and form. Next, the cartilage is permanently* secured back into position with internal, non-removable sutures. For some individuals, it is not necessary to remove any cartilage. In these cases, the surgeon will simply use stitches to hold the cartilage in a more appropriate position.

Ear surgery creates almost immediate results for people with protruding ears. Once the dressings are removed, the new ear shape is revealed. Additionally, because of the natural ear folds and the new position of the ears, surgical scars are either hidden within the natural ear creases or they are hidden behind the ear. Typically the outcomes are so natural and truly fit with the person’s face, you’d never know they weren’t born with those beautiful ears!

What to Expect during Otoplasty Consultation

Your surgical plan will depend on your initial consultation and the goals that you and the surgeon establish. It is essential that you are very clear regarding your concerns and desired outcomes. By giving the surgeon clear explanation of your desired results, you will be more likely to get the look you desire.

Otoplasty surgery is performed with sedation and local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on your surgeon’s recommendations. The goal is to ensure optimal comfort and safety during the procedure. In general, an ear surgery for both ears takes approximately one to two hours.

After Ear Surgery

Once the surgical procedure is completed, your ears are covered with soft dressings. The soft bandages are worn on the ears for a few days to ensure proper healing, and to reduce swelling and any potential bleeding. You will likely feel some discomfort or even itching. Your surgeon will recommend an appropriate pain medication for comfort. There is not much bruising associated with this surgery, in comparison to other facial surgeries.

Otoplasty Recovery and Healing Process

During the healing process over the week following surgery, you must avoid any pressure over the ears. You should avoid sleeping on your side and avoid rubbing the ears. During the night you will wear a headband to cover the ears for several weeks. This will keep you from pulling the ears forward when you sleep. Your most important job after surgery is simply to allow the ears to heal and protect them from any pulling, pressure or stress.

A few days after your procedure, your surgeon will remove your bandages and you will see your new look! You will still have some swelling, but by two weeks, most of the swelling should subside.
