Why may need a Mommy Makeover?
The journey into motherhood is amazing, yet emotionally and physically taxing. A woman’s body is uniquely and genetically designed for reproduction. In order to properly carry and support the growth of a developing baby, a woman’s body goes through a myriad of remarkable changes. These changes are largely governed by fluctuating hormones, causing ligaments to relax, skin to stretch, breast tissue to enlarge, and fat accumulation.
The remarkable process results in the creation of new life. However, for many women, pregnancy and delivery leave their bodies altered, scarred, and dramatically changed postpartum. Fortunately Ennis Plastic Surgery specializes in The Mommy Makeover, an innovative set of procedures that are designed to combat these changes.
How do Postpartum changes affect my body?
Typical changes to a mother’s figure occur in the breasts, abdomen, and thighs. For women that begin pregnancy at a healthy weight, current guidelines from the Institute of Medicine recommend that she gain 25-35 pounds over the course of the pregnancy. This rapid weight gain quickly stretches the abdominal muscles, as well as the skin over the stomach, hips and thighs. Specific changes include:
- Breast changes: During pregnancy, the breasts enlarge quickly, preparing the body for breastfeeding. If a mother breastfeeds, the breasts may enlarge even further. This rapid growth may leave unwanted stretch marks. Once breastfeeding is discontinued, the breast volume shrinks and many women are left with loose skin. This can cause the breast to look saggy and deflated. Women may go from a full C cup to a small A cup after breastfeeding several children, through repeated stretching and shrinking of breasts. Some women accumulate excess fat in their breasts over the course of pregnancy and they are left with larger breasts than wanted.
- Abdominal changes: During pregnancy, there is rapid stretching of the abdominal wall, which includes the abdominal muscles and overlying skin and fat. This rapid stretching often leaves stretch marks and loose, sagging skin. Women are left with excess skin tissue with poor elasticity. Diet and exercise are important, but cannot tighten overstretched abdominal skin.
- Other body changes during Pregnancy: Many women put on excess fat around the hips, thighs and flanks during pregnancy. After delivery, this type of fat is very difficult to shed. Even with rigorous diet and exercise, many women are not able to return to their pre-pregnancy body. The shape-shifting that occurs varies from one mother to the next. The ability to reclaim a pre-pregnancy body also varies for every mother. The good news is that there are surgical options to remedy these changes. The Mommy Makeover restores shape, youthful appearance, and confidence.

What does a Mommy Makeover include?
The purpose of a Mommy Makeover is to surgically improve the appearance of a woman’s post-pregnancy body, to improve her figure to a more youthful shape. The Mommy Makeover strives to improve a woman’s self-esteem, and confidence by assisting in the restoration of her natural female form.
The Mommy Makeover is specific to each woman. Many women choose to have a breast augmentation, some with a breast lift. Others choose a tummy tuck, and liposuction. The Classic Mommy Makeover combines both breast surgery and body contouring. Your surgical plan will depend on your problem areas, concerns and goals. During the consultation, your surgeonb will study your body, and listen to your concerns in order to create a uniquely tailored treatment plan.
Mommy Makeover Procedures
Breast surgery will focus on enhancing and restoring the look and feel of your breasts. You may be a candidate for a breast augmentation and/or breast lift.
The most common breast surgery for mothers is a breast augmentation. A breast augmentation reshapes the breast with the addition of a saline or silicone implant, which restores lost volume. During your consultation, you will look through before and after photos, and have the option of using the Vectra 3D imaging system to “try on” different breast implants. This technology gives you a visual indication of realistic outcomes.
The surgeon will be able to answer your questions and concerns to assist you in making the best choice for your desired outcomes. Our doctor spend a lot of time with each woman, learning their preferences and analyzing their anatomy. This thorough consultation allows him to select the most appropriate implant, for a natural and pleasing shape. Dr. Ennis utilizes an endoscopic breast augmentation technique that creates incisions under the armpit in order to avoid any visible scarring to the breasts.
For some women, breast augmentation alone is not sufficient. A breast lift improves the shape and profile of the breasts, returning them to a more youthful position and shape. This procedure corrects for breasts that seem saggy or deflated. Our surgeons specialize in minimally invasive, short incision techniques called vertical mastopexy/periareolar mastopexy. Shorter incisions give outcomes with smaller, less visible scarring. Though less common, some women undergo a breast lift without implant, if she has sufficient natural breast volume. The breast lift procedure removes excess skin and repositions the breast tissue, for a natural and pleasing outcome.
Breast Lift or Breast Augmentation? Q&A with Dr. Ennis
The purpose of liposuction is to reduce fat cells in regions that have not responded to diet and exercise. Liposuction improves the contours and shape of your body. After pregnancy, you may have excess fat in the regions of the hips, buttocks, flank and thighs. The liposuction procedure will be tailored to your needs, focusing on your problem areas.
The purpose of a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is to restore a flat stomach and remove the postpartum bulge many women are left with. During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles separate, leaving many women with a weak and poorly defined midsection.
Our surgeons specialize uses a technique to tighten the abdominal muscles, restoring strength and definition to the midsection. The surgeon creates an Internal Corset to provide strength and definition to your middle. In addition, excess skin and fat are removed, eliminating the postpartum sag in the middle. If the shape of the umbilicus (belly button) has been altered, the surgeon will surgically correct it. The doctor will place the incision low to follow the bikini line, so it is discretely hidden by clothing and bathing suits.
