The Causes of Brown Spots on the Skin

Melanin is a naturally occurring pigment that is found in the skin. If too much melanin is produced in one area, you see a resultant brown patch on the skin. There are many names for dark skin discolorations, including brown spots, sunspots, skin mottling and brown facial pigmentation.

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: This type of hyperpigmentation is due to an inflammatory trauma to the skin, such as post acne healing, healing rashes, or poorly administered laser techniques or chemical peels.
  • Aging: As a part of the natural aging process, older adults commonly acquire small darkened patches over the skin on the face, forearms, and hands.
  • Sun exposure: Repeated and prolonged sun exposure can lead to brown spots over areas of skin that were exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck, shoulders, arms and hands.

The good news is that Ennis Plastic Surgery offers many viable treatment options to fade and even remove* brown spots and other facial discolorations!

Benefits of the Photo Facial include:

  • Improved sun damage and wrinkled skin
  • Removal of brown and age spots
  • Removal of freckles
  • Removal of broken capillaries/redness in the skin
  • Minimal risk
  • Stimulation of new collagen synthesis for improved skin tone

The Photo Facial

The Photo Facial produces a beam of laser light that breaks up pigmented brown spots, which causes them to flake off in a few days. In addition, it coagulates and removes* blood vessels that are found below the skin surface. Most people notice a marked improvement in redness, broken capillaries and the removal of brown spots.

The treatment generally takes 15-30 minutes. Anesthetics are not needed for this procedure. . It is generally recommended that you receive 1-4 sessions for best results.

Photo Facial technology is known for great precision and safety. The skin may appear red or flushed, and feel warm, but this usually subsides within a few hours. Brown spots can become darker for a few days until they flake off. After having the Photo Facial, you can return to your normal activities the same day. This procedure has virtually no down time, which is what makes it such a popular energy technique.

Individuals with the very darkest skin may not be appropriate for this treatment. Patient’s that have a tan should wait until their tan fades before having this form of energy treatment. After having the treatment, you should keep your face well cleansed and moisturized. You should avoid excessive exposure to the sun and avoid tanning. Utilization of sunscreen is recommended.

Laser Therapies for Brown Spots

Laser therapies utilize precise high pulsed light energy of a specific wavelength, for specific procedures and indications. Some lasers are intended to remove* the upper layer of the skin epidermis to remove* sunspots and improve complexion of skin.

Many patients only require one treatment for dramatic reduction in brown spots. During the laser treatment, the light is passed over the pigmented skin to shatter the pigment into tiny particles. The body’s natural ability to heal will process and eliminate* these from the skin. For spot treatments, the procedure can be performed in as little as 10 minutes. The treatment causes a slight stinging sensation but typically no anesthetics are needed.

Utilization of laser technology with the GentleMax Pro has great clinical safety. Some patients may experience heat and skin redness. Brown spots can become darker and have mild crusting before flaking off in a few days. Due to this effect,, if you are planning to have several facial spots treated, you may want to take a few days of “social downtime”. Individuals having laser therapy over the body or hands are typically able to return to their normal activities the next day.

After the treatment is completed, it is important to follow good skincare habits, keeping skin well moisturized and utilizing sunscreen.

Peels for Brown Spots

Chemical Peel: A Chemical peel is a classic cosmetic procedure to renew and revitalize skin. Chemical peels use an acidic solution to peel away the most superficial layers of skin, reducing surface discoloration and hyperpigmentation. The peel works by forcing cellular turnover, revealing new skin cells that have improved tone and texture.

The VI Peel is an excellent option for addressing lingering dark spots. The VI Peel is intended to target sun damage, melasma and acne scarring. After the application, skin peeling begins 24-48 hours and lasts 6-7 days. Typical results are visible after one treatment and can last for several months. This is a great option for hyperpigmentation due to acne spots.

It is important to note that skin peels are not recommended for individuals that have a known allergy to aspirin, have active cold sores, those who are pregnant, are receiving chemotherapy or have had recent waxing in the treatment area.
